GO09 – Geological Overview for Petroleum Engineers

Course Goal:

Provides the basic elements of geology, relevant to petroleum exploration and production.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, participant will be able to know:

  1. The classification of rocks especially the sedimentary rocks
  2. The geologic time
  3. Stratigraphy and the different depositional systems
  4. Structure geology and trap development
  5. Plate tectonics and sedimentary basins formation and classification
  6. Petroleum geology and petroleum generation, migration and accumulation

  2. Rocks of sedimentary origin.
  3. Geological times & principles of stratigraphy.
  4. Basic concepts of structural geology.
  5. Habitat of petroleum parameters controlling the occurrence of petroleum.
  6. Sedimentary basins & basin evolution.
  7. Subsurface features controlling petroleum accumulation.
  8. Application of contour maps to field development.
  9. Cross – sections & paleogeologic maps.
  10. Principles of correlation.
  11. Introduction to geological modeling.
